01
CLIENT
Breeding expertise, powered by connected digital services.
NSFO is the national federation for sheep and goat farmers in the Netherlands. It manages animal registration, welfare, breeding records and government compliance for farmers across the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and soon the US. Its work spans livestock administration, breeding values, pasture ecology and agricultural AI. What makes the partnership distinctive is the breadth of the product ecosystem. Awesomity works with NSFO as a long-term product partner.
02
CHALLENGE
A growing ecosystem, one trusted livestock data foundation.
NSFO needed to modernize legacy systems and bring fragmented tools together without disrupting production systems used by farmers every day. At the same time, the domain is highly specialized: animal registration, breeding values, welfare, government compliance, pasture ecology and agricultural AI all have to work together. The challenge was not simply building new features. The platform had to handle large and complex livestock datasets, mobile workflows, offline field use, integrations and evolving research-driven functionality, while keeping the experience reliable for users working directly with animals.
03
APPROACH
Partnership, not a project.
Awesomity embedded as a long-term product partner rather than working from a fixed one-off scope. A rotating team of 3–5 engineers works with NSFO stakeholders to co-create the roadmap, manage priorities across multiple products and continuously deliver improvements. Delivery is iterative and outcome-focused. The team combines product ownership, backend and frontend engineering, UI/UX and data science, bringing in specialist expertise when needed. This approach has supported everything from core livestock administration and mobile apps to computer vision, breeding-value data and pasture analysis.

PRODUCTS
Six products, one team.
01

NSFO Online Platform
NSFO Online is a centralized platform supporting farmers with livestock management. Designed as a hub for future projects and data exchange, it currently serves sheep and goat farmers in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg, with plans to expand into the USA and ultimately become the EU's official database.
02

Stickreader App(Sheep & Goat)
The StickReader app works with a specialized reader that farmers use to scan a sheep's ear tag, wirelessly transmitting its 10-digit ID to the app. By integrating core NSFO Online functionalities, the app lets farmers quickly send livestock management updates such as location, births, and deaths directly from the field.
03

Kringloop Platform
The Kringloop system consists of two components: an Admin Portal, where administrators manage surveys, collect responses, and calculate quality scores based on weighted answers; and a Farmers' Portal, where farmers log in to complete surveys and submit their responses for evaluation in order to get a kringloop label.
04

Weidmonitor App
The Weidmonitor (grass detection) app lets farmers photograph their fields' grass throughout the year, storing images in the cloud. This provides a dated, location-tagged record to support subsidy claims on grass quality and diversity, while AI analysis of the photos generates data that can be cross-checked against farmers' self-reported input to flag discrepancies and guide inspections.
05

Cool Sheep AI
Cool Sheep AI (also referred to as the "blij lam project") is an artificial intelligence project focused on predicting sheep weight from images.

IMPACT
Digital livestock products, built around real operational needs.
A more connected NSFO ecosystem, with NSFO Online, mobile applications, Stick Reader and data products supporting livestock and breeding workflows across office and field environments.
The Kringloop quality label is being digitized into a structured digital assessment, making sustainability evaluation easier to manage, complete and report on while creating a foundation for richer data-driven insights.
Grass Detection and Grazing Detection extend NSFO's services with integrated AI models that can support more automated observation and interpretation of pasture and grazing-related information.
Cool Sheep AI brings computer vision into practical livestock management by estimating sheep weight from images, reducing reliance on purely manual measurement workflows and opening new possibilities for faster field data collection.
Field work is becoming more practical through the Sheep and GOAT mobile applications, offline support, Stick Reader capabilities and continued improvements to camera-based ear-tag recognition.

OWNERSHIP, NOT TICKETS
“Awesomity owns outcomes, not just deliverables. That's the difference.”
Domain expertise isn't something you hire for on day one. It builds over time — and it compounds. The longer we work with NSFO, the better the software gets. The AI and computer vision work wasn't handed to us as a spec — it was co-developed through a structured process of communication, validation, and pushing each other to think bigger.
